The 12th Man flag firmly planted in Renton

I’ve experienced the grand cathedrals of England, meant to inspire awe in both visitor and the faithful.

That’s happening right now, in Renton, on the shores of Lake Washington. Only this, one might argue, is a cathedral to football.

No it’s not some grand stadium, where there’s not bad seat in the house. And, some might argue, it’s just a place for people to work in an office and for big men to get ready for their jobs on Sunday.

But it is grand, just the same, and just a bit disorienting in his sheer size. Everything is big, right down to the “Å“school desks” meant to fit a linebacker.

This week, the public and media got some of the first views of the inside of the new Seattle Seahawks headquarters and practice facility ““ the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in north Renton.

The Seahawks have taken the keys to their new facility. The big moving day is coming up and the players got a taste of the new facilities in a practice on Wednesday. Practices will resume in Kirkland and the fans will have to wait until next season to sit on a grassy berm and watch their team practice. 12 Seahawks Way Renton, WA 98056 is the new address for the new Seahawks headquarters and training facility, formally known as the Virginia Mason Athletic Center (VMAC), being built on lake front real estate in Renton WA.

“The Seahawks announced on May 9, 2006, plans for a state-of-the-art training facility to be located along Lake Washington. The 200,000 square foot waterfront facility, second-largest in the NFL, will be located within the northern city limits of Renton and scheduled to open in the Summer of 2008. The property is bounded by Interstate 405 to the east, Lake Washington to the west, residential property to the north and 44th Street to the south… 

The privately funded practice facility will be situated on 19 acres of industrial property. It will house a permanent indoor practice facility, the team’s current Kirkland front office departments and will also accommodate Corporate sponsorships and Fan Development that are currently located at Qwest Field.

In addition, there will be four outdoor practice fields, 50,000 square feet of training facility space (currently 16,000 in Kirkland), 15,000 square feet of player meeting space (currently 5,700) and 48,000 square feet of administrative office space (currently 14,500).

The facility will also include access for fans to attend training camp.

Purchased by Vulcan Real Estate in 2000, the land was formerly home to a coal tar refinery & creosote plant, since remediated by Vulcan in concert with the City of Renton and Washington State“  Provided by Seahawks.com
